Mission Statement  & Goals

Sowebo Arts
Inc. is a Baltimore  non-profit community arts organization.

Our Mission:
“Is to foster community enrichment through the promotion of the arts”.
In this pursuit Sowebo Arts mines the talents of our neighborhood artists, musicians, and working professionals. We also strive to bring outside artists and their work into our community.

Sowebo Arts:
  • Supports and organizes the Sowebohemian Arts Festival every Memorial Day Weekend.
  • Sponsors yearly open studio visits and summer film series in historic Union Square Park.
  • Organizes the Artist Market during the Union Square Cookie Tour.
  • Promotes the membership exhibition and community space in the Adler Gallery at 100 S. Stricker St.
  • Maintains the www.soweboarts.org  website  to support and promote the  community artists and events.
  • Developing children's educational art events and workshops.

Sustaining Southwest Baltimore's longstanding
grassroots art culture.

Many professional artists live in Sowebo. This includes some of the areas earliest pioneers, people who transformed dilapidated properties, old bathhouses, chicken factories, firehouse, collapsed mansions, into attractive housing, work, and gallery space. Their investments have sustained a unique community, which is now the foundation for revitalization. Artists living beyond its borders know and value Sowebo.

  • The Sowebohemian Arts Festival turns 21 this year, it is held every of Memorial Day weekend Sunday surrounding historic Hollins Market. The festival presents Baltimore's largest free music venue presenting over 40 bands with 3 blocks of Arts & Crafts vendors, puppet shows, outdoor sculpture, and kid's art & fun. We showcase the  large salon style non-juried art exhibit in the cavernous Carriage House Gallery.
  • Sowebo Poster Show and Auction. Every year 60 + local and regional artists create and then donate original works of art on our unique posters. These posters are hung in the Charles Theater and area cafes before the Festival in May and auctioned after the Festival in June. Now in its 18th year this is an incredible popular way to obtain original and collectable art.

New and longstanding establishments serve as
lively anchors in Sowebo.

  • Black Cherry Puppet, the awe-inspiring Theater (est. 1980) at 1115 Hollins St.  Black Cherry has long been entertaining children with performances and educational workshops in schools and festivals regionally. The building features a garden performance space and will feature a 50-seat theater, studios, and a Puppetry Resource Center. www.BlackCherry.org
  • City Firehouse #13, at 43 S. Carey, now home to Devon Davison’s multi-discipline studio for painting, pottery, sculpture, and digital arts: computer animation, documentary and photo editing.
  • Umri Siki, Robert William‘s African Art and Artifacts at 1100 Hollins St. has spirit filled Ivory Coast, Congo masks, Dogon carved figures, beautiful Mali “Bogalifine” dresses, hats, and jewelry. Robert is a teacher to anyone who steps inside his gallery and listens.
